Programmed learning actually refers to the material or the program, as it is called, that goes into the machine. This program can be presented not only by machine but also in book form, as a programmed text. In fact, over 90% of commercially available programs appear in programmed text format. T h e following are generally emphasized as the main characteristics of programmed instruction : 1. Specification of objectives. T h e terminal behavior, or the desired student response upon completion of the program, is clearly and precisely specified in full detail in advance.

T h e following general procedures were used in all four subject matter areas. A linear program was administered to one student at a time. If he had difficulty in responding to any of the items in the program, he was interviewed immediately so that the cause of his difficulty could be determined. In an attempt to remedy the difficulty, the experimenter then tutored the student, using a variety of techniques. When the difficulty was resolved, the experimenter recorded the program sequence or techniques that seemed to be effective.
