Circumferential skin splices are generally of the butt-joint type. The butt joint is necessary on circumferential splices to obtain an aerodynamically smooth surface. Prior to assembly, many of the fuselage components are treated to inhibit corrosion of the metal. These treatments may include the use of anodizing, sealants, and primer coatings. The selection of the metal alloys used in the construction is also a factor in control of corrosion. With proper selection of the metals that will be in contact with each other, dissimilar metal corrosion can be reduced or eliminated.

In the last generation of Boeing aircraft, the 757 and 767, composites were used only in secondary components and made up only 3 percent of the structural weight. However, in the next generation of Boeing aircraft, the 777, composites are expected to make up 10 to 20 percent of the structure and to be utilized throughout the aircraft, as illustrated in Fig. 2-33. Composite components were used increasingly on the new aircraft introduced in the 1980s. Composite applications include flight-control surfaces, fairings, engine nacelle components, and interiors.
