Prior to assembly, many of the fuselage components are treated to inhibit corrosion of the metal. These treatments may include the use of anodizing, sealants, and primer coatings. The selection of the metal alloys used in the construction is also a factor in control of corrosion. With proper selection of the metals that will be in contact with each other, dissimilar metal corrosion can be reduced or eliminated.

Composite components were used increasingly on the new aircraft introduced in the 1980s. Composite applications include flight-control surfaces, fairings, engine nacelle components, and interiors.
